An experience like none other

We open in May!

On the night of March 16, a new eruption started in our area. This is the 4th eruption since December. The eruption is still ongoing but is not causing any threat of damages to the infrastructure in the area nor our hotel. Temporary high sulfur dioxide levels continue to be measured around the eruption site and in municipalities in the Reykjanes peninsula. Gas from the eruption is likely to cause pollution in the Reykjanes peninsula.

Because of this situation we will keep the hotel closed to middle of May. We do hope to be able to open our restaurant soon, as it is easier to open and close a daily operation while it is difficult to run a hotel with opening hours based on the wind direction.

We will continue to closely follow the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities, working collaboratively with them to monitor the progression of events. Our plan is to open on May 17.

The country is well-prepared, featuring advanced preparedness protocols and is equipped with highly experienced geoscientists who have extensive knowledge in managing volcanic activities. Experts at the Icelandic Meteorological Office continue to closely monitor the area.

As before the safety of our guests and staff is always our priority.

We are looking forward to welcoming you at Northern Light Inn in May!

From Our Guests

We are greatly thankful for all the support and positive reviews, like the one below from our guests that were with us during the evacuation on Feb 8, along with countless emails we have received all over the world from former guests, sending us good thoughts and prayers. We can’t thank you enough as this is giving us immense strength to get through these challenging times.

To our guests that have booked a stay with us we would like to say, our focus is always first and foremost on safety for our guests and staff at all times.

“I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The amenities are top notch with even heated towel rack in the bathroom. The food at Max's Restaurant is amazing. We even got to experience the staff in an emergency. On Feb 8, 2024 I was awakened by a knock at the door with a pleasant smile and announcement, "Time to evacuate. We have an eruption." The staff was extremely organized and calm throughout the evacuation and all got out safe. It was surprising to see how close the eruption was to the hotel. Thank you all for an incredible stay. Thankfully a volcanic eruption isn't always on the agenda.”

“Wonderful hotel, staff are excellent. I was really upset when we were evacuated on the 8th of February due to the near by volcano eruption but the staff were so caring and reassuring. We were evacuated very quickly and calmly. It was such a shame we didn't have the opportunity to stay longer at this fabulous location. I hope this Wonderful place is safe and able to open soon.”

“Loved our brief stay here. Tragically it was cut short by the eruption on 8th Feb.

The first few nights were excellent. We were lucky enough to get a good show of the Northern lights on our very first night, which I would have missed if it weren't for the optional wake-up alarm service they provide.

All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Excellent service all round.

After the evacuation, the staff were communicative and very swift in arranging alternative accommodation for us, despite my phone having network issues, and despite us making an "executive decision" and driving off into the sunset (the police were keen to get everyone away, in any direction, as quickly as possible, understandably). We spent the day soaking at the Secret Lagoon wondering if we'd dreamt the whole thing, but the hotel had already been in touch and sorted everything for us before we got there.

We're genuinely worried about the hotel and its staff, and Grindavik as a whole. We hope that everything is somehow made safe and they can all have some safety and security very soon.”

GREAT WAYS
TO SPEND A DAY while AT NLI

We have multiple options of how to spend a day here in Iceland. Here is an official site with a full list.

  1. Visit the Blue Lagoon.

  2. Do an ATV tour.

  3. Reykjanes GeoPark Route.

  4. Golf in Grindavik. 18 holes in beautiful surroundings where you start surrounded by lava and end on a links course with black sands and great overview of the Atlantic ocean. Something you can most likely not get anywhere else and is a must try for any golfer.

  5. Snorkling in Kleifarvatn. This is like snorkling in a glass of champagne. Add this snorkling experience with a visit to Krisuvik.

  6. Do like the locals and visit one of many swimming pools, heated water all year around, hot tubs, saunas etc.

It is also worth mentioning that staying at Northern Light Inn gives you a great access to all the most popular tourist attractions on the south of Iceland like:

  • The Golden Circle, 2 hours drive from us (but this is a whole day trip).

  • South Shore Adventure with waterfalls, volcanos, Diamond Beach (whole day trip).

  • Caves like The lava Tunnel, about 1 hour drive from us.
